Vocabulary of Parliament

Terminology Bulletin 240

By Cyrille Goulet. This new publication is not only an updated and revised version of its less ambitious predecessor, the 1989 BT-189 entitled The Language of Parliament. It is much more comprehensive and is also, to some extent, the synthesis of all works on parliamentary terminology produced in Canada. The Vocabulary of Parliament also contains a number of expressions and phrases, some of which include co-occurrents. Some of these expressions and phrases relate to politics, law and finance, and contain information useful to Parliament.

Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of this work is that the base list was carefully reviewed in the light of other similar works and about a quarter of the 1 600 terms or so were defined or explained in a note. Also included are several examples of alternative translations for cases involving a number of problems, some of them phraseology-related.
