Departmental Performance Report Vocabulary

Terminology Bulletin 242

By Samek Janowski. On April 24, 1997, the House of Commons passed a motion dividing Part III of the Main Estimates for departments and agencies into two documents, a Report on Plans and Priorities and a Departmental Performance Report (DPR). Thus, in the fall of each year, a DPR is tabled by each federal government department or agency. It contains performance information used by Members of Parliament to advise the government on resource allocation in advance of the budget and supply process in the spring.

Because of the important role of the DPR in government accountability to Parliament, the Treasury Board Secretariat decided to collect and harmonize related English and French terminology recommended for use in all government departments and agencies. The Secretariat assigned this task to the Translation Bureau, the organization responsible for standardizing and distributing terminology within the federal Public Service.

The Departmental Performance Report Vocabulary, a publication of 94 entries with most of the terms defined in both official languages, was prepared from the Guideline for Preparing Performance Reports to Parliament, from Accounting for Results, the Treasury Board President's 1997 annual report to Parliament, as well as from a number of departmental performance reports.

This work will prove useful to all translators, revisers, writers and editors, as well as to other professionals required to work in the field.
