The University Scholarships in Translation Component is intended to enable eligible post-secondary institutions to attract, retain, and graduate new translators and interpreters by encouraging students to pursue careers in these fields.
Another objective is to attract students who are already registered in programs in post-secondary educational institutions that may lead to a career in translation, interpretation, terminology or localization. Organizations will be selected to co-ordinate the awarding of scholarships to eligible students.
Increased numbers of qualified workers will have a positive impact on public and private-sector organizations. It will help them expand their own capacity and allow them to contribute more effectively to the growth of the industry.
Eligible organizations
Post-secondary educational institutions and other educational institutions in Canada that offer translation programs.
College or university programs leading to a Bachelor's degree in translation or a Master's or PhD degree in a field of study related to translation, interpretation, terminology or localization.
Priority will be given to post-secondary educational institutions that are able to contribute additional funding towards the amounts allocated under the Program.
Eligible activities
Awarding of scholarships to eligible students in the form of financial assistance.
Student eligibility criteria for scholarships
Post-secondary institutions will be required to identify their methodology for determining how students will be selected to receive scholarships. However, the following criteria must be respected.
Students must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants enrolled in a full-time or a part-time translation program (including interpretation, terminology, localization and language technology integration) in a Canadian post-secondary institution. This includes students in the first, second, third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts in translation, a Master's in interpretation or a doctoral degree, or in a college program that leads to a university degree or students in a joint program, involving a second technical discipline.
Informing companies and college and university graduates of opportunities to strengthen the language sector by contributing to scholarship programs in order to supplement the amounts allocated by the Government of Canada.
Promotion of scholarship programs to secondary schools, community colleges, post-secondary educational institutions, private-sector companies and the general public.

Since the Program objective is to strengthen the capacity of the entire language sector, no direct financial support will be offered to individual firms. For example, the following activities are not eligible:
risk capital financing
commercial product development
commercial product promotion and marketing
research activities
commercial advertising
travel to other countries
capital costs for the construction of a building (other than repairs or renovations to support the participation of persons with disabilities) or the purchase of land or buildings
